It is critical that you are committed to a vigorous rehabilitation schedule and are willing to pay careful attention to preventing infection. Other factors like type of surgery, your individual risk of bleeding and complications may impact your recovery. If you have damage in multiple joints, your rehabilitation may need to proceed more slowly, or require special equipment. ANKLE JOINT FUSION
For ankle joint fusion your foot will be put in a cast to immobilize the joint until complete fusion of the bones is achieved.13 This usually takes about 10-12 weeks.13 During the first 6 weeks you will be in a rigid cast and should not put any weight on the joint.2 A cast or an ankle-foot stirrup or air splint that allows weight bearing will then be used for an additional 6 weeks. Factor replacement therapy will be needed before, during, and after the procedure. Pain medication will likely be prescribed. Once complete healing has occurred the joint will no longer be flexible, but most of your pain should be gone and the joint will bear your weight better, allowing you to walk with little or no pain.
