IMMEDIATELY AFTER SURGERY
After major surgery you will be moved to the recovery room where you will remain for 1-2 hours while your recovery from anesthesia is monitored. When you awaken from the anesthesia the pain from surgery may be quite intense. Pain medication will be provided. You will then be moved from the recovery room to a hospital room. You may spend several days in intensive care, so that you can be closely monitored, before you are moved to a regular hospital room.
LENGTH OF HOSPITAL STAY

The length of hospital stay will vary depending on the type of surgery you had and the speed of your recovery. Issues that affect the amount of time you will need to be hospitalized include your risk of bleeding and your factor treatment regimen, as well as your need for more intense physical therapy.
Radiosynovectomy: You do not usually need to be hospitalized for this procedure,2 although in some cases your doctor may want to keep you overnight for observation.
Surgical synovectomy: The hospital stay after arthroscopic or open synovectomy may be a few days or several weeks.2
Joint replacement surgery: After joint replacement surgery, you will most likely stay in the hospital for 2 weeks or more.2 The long hospital stay is necessary to make sure there is control of bleeding and to provide an intensive physical therapy program.2
Joint fusion: Hospitalization after ankle joint fusion may be several days to a week or more. The joint will be immobilized in a cast.
