Because of frequent joint bleeds, minor and major orthopedic procedures are the most common elective procedures needed in people with hemophilia A or B with inhibitors. To learn more about your surgical procedure, select from the options in the drop down menu below.
OPEN SYNOVECTOMY
Open synovectomy is done by surgically opening the knee to cut out or burn off the synovial membrane. More synovial tissue can usually be removed with an open procedure than with an arthroscopic procedure.13 However, this procedure requires several days or more of hospitalization, large amounts of clotting factor therapy, and a tough physical therapy program.2 Arthroscopic synovectomy is usually preferred, and open procedures are now done infrequently.
